IS-Abel
A Journey from
Silence to Strength.
IS-Abel is a reminder that where you begin does not define where you can go. I share my story in the hope that it offers understanding, encouragement, and strength to those walking similar paths.

A Word From The Author
This book is my truth. IS-Abel was written to give voice to experiences that are often hidden and misunderstood. It is a story of pain, resilience, and ultimately hope – for anyone who has ever felt forgotten or unheard.
IS-Abel shares my journey through life within the care system, navigating challenges that could have defined me, yet discovering the strength to rise above them. It is a story about the power of hope, the importance of perseverance, and the remarkable human capacity to overcome adversity. Through my experiences, I aim to illuminate the realities of the care system, share my path of personal growth, and inspire others who may be facing their own struggles.

Why I wrote IS-Abel.
I wrote IS-Abel to make sense of my past and to show that healing is possible. This book is for anyone who has been touched by the care system and for those who believe in the power of resilience.
This memoir is not just about surviving the care system – it’s about discovering purpose beyond it. My hope is that IS-Abel helps others recognise their own worth, strength, and potential, and encourages them to embrace the possibility of a brighter future.
What Readers Are Saying
A message from my heart to yours.
An amazing book written by this remarkable woman who has told her story not only about her survival against all the terrible tragedies that happened in her life, the story also outlines how her determination helped her navigate the difficulties she encountered. This story will inspire you. It is a credit to the author of how she singularly fought so much for survival and she is a beacon of hope for those who have had similar experiences. A great read.

I have known Isabel through her work and my own crossing over. I was aware that she been in the care system as friends were in a similar situation and we had briefly touched on the topic. Never in my wildest dreams have I ever identified with a book which deals with trauma through the system and life afterwards, to sharing her brave boys health issues after a horrendous event at her home – whilst, as always, Isabel was supporting a charity! The fallout for her family was beyond words! At times this is a difficult read, particularly, if like me, you had or have a tenuous relationship with a parent, for whatever reason. Read the book, it is inspiring, informative, a real tale of triumph over adversity… huge credit to the author and her family who singularly and together meet life’s challenges head on!

About Isabel Kelly
IS-Abel is a memoir tracing the remarkable journey of Isabel Kelly, who was abandoned by her mother at just four months old and placed in Northern Ireland’s care system. The narrative explores her childhood in a children’s home, marked by emotional and physical abuse, neglect, identity struggles, and the long-lasting effects of early trauma.
Despite repeated setbacks – including failing her O-Levels/GCSEs twice – Isabel’s determination never wavered. She ultimately achieved what no foster child in her region had before: becoming the first foster child to graduate from university. Along the way, she sought emotional healing, engaged with counselling and faith, and embarked on a process of forgiveness – of both others and herself – that she describes as transformative.
The memoir also highlights systemic failures: insufficient emotional support, punitive regimes in children’s homes, limited assistance after leaving care, and even small but meaningful errors, like the misspelling of her name on official documents. Yet, Isabel refuses to be defined by these deficits. Instead, IS-Abel is as much about triumph as trauma. She builds a life grounded in love – through her husband and the family she creates – in purpose, helping others, and in the belief that resilience is real.
Ultimately, IS-Abel is a story of hope. It affirms that your start does not have to determine your finish, and that even when systems fail, the human spirit can heal, connect, and flourish. It offers a raw, honest look at what growing up in care can feel like and serves as a beacon for anyone touched by adoption or foster care, anyone seeking belonging, or anyone navigating the long-term effects of childhood adversity.
